1. Public/Private Partnership Conference Scheduled

The Mayor's Office of Partnerships and Grants Development (OPGD), the Washington Council of Agencies (WCA), and Citibank will present the Fourth Annual Public Private Partnership Conference on October 24, with assistance from Raffa Associates.

Local and federal government agencies, nonprofit organizations, faith-based organizations, businesses, and individuals will learn about building partnerships to support priority neighborhood issues in the Washington region. The conference theme, "Partnerships: Now More than Ever," will address issues such as the economic slowdown, fewer grants, and stiffer competition for more limited resources.

Advance registration is required. The event will be held at The George Washington University's Marvin Center.

2. District Opens Center For Small Businesses

The DC Department of Employment Services (DOES) opened its first Business Resource Center, located at 77 P Street NE, Suite 3149. The center provides start-up and existing small business owners with:

  • Business counseling
  • Technical assistance
  • Online access to the Master Business License application process
  • Assistance developing business and marketing plans

The center has a small reference library, complete with entrepreneurial start-up guides, and computers with Internet access, business-planning software, and audiovisual equipment to view video programs tailored for small businesses. The center will also provide referral services for attorneys and accountants.

Located in the center is incubator space to provide basic office services and equipment, technology support services, meeting space, and assistance to obtain information on the financing necessary for company growth.

3. Georgia Avenue Business Resource Center Launches Website

The Georgia Avenue Business Resource Center (GABRC) launched a new website to showcase its programs and events for the Washington, DC small business community. The website includes news, resources, and a current events calendar.

Upcoming events for small businesses will include seminars about business plans, bookkeeping software, and insurance. GABRC invites expert outside speakers to help businesses ensure that they have the tools to succeed.

The news articles recognize GABRC's past and current activities in publications of the Federal Reserve, DC Chamber of Commerce, and DC Council.

4. Small Business Training Dates Released

The Washington, DC Small Business Development Center Network (DC SBDC) released its training calendar covering the remainder of 2002.

The training sessions span a variety of topics including:

  • Business Plan Writing
  • Business Management
  • Starting a Business
  • SBA Loans
  • Motivational Speakers
  • Franchise Opportunities
  • Government Contracts

Many sessions are free, while others charge a nominal fee. The sessions are held at the five DC SBDC service centers and other locations within DC. DC SBDC strongly recommends that attendees RSVP for sessions.
