1. Business Services Brochure Promoted to Employers The Department of Employment Services (DOES) is promoting a new Business Services brochure to all employers in the District. This useful brochure presents businesses and nonprofits with a comprehensive guide of all DOES programs currently offered for employers. Some topics covered are:

Businesses Reminded About Emergency Planning The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) continues to suggest that businesses develop an emergency plan for the safety of their employees and facilities. A Metropolitan Police Department presentation from February 2003 details the 10 elements of security improvement and safety considerations. Businesses can obtain a copy of "Crisis Planning for Private Facilities," a 24-page presentation in Adobe PDF format. DMPED also suggests that businesses read Mayor Williams comments on the potential effect of war on the District's economy. Should the economic climate change, the District has a plan to help the economy stabilize and recover. The plan focuses on connecting District businesses with existing resources and empowering residents to play a role in improving the economy. Read the statement. 3. New Website Focuses on Bioterrorism Information The Department of Health (DOH) recently launched a new website to help District businesses, residents, and local health care providers identify and respond to bioterrorism incidents. The website is part of a new bioterrorism campaign by DOH to ensure that the District's businesses, residents, and health care providers are alert to possible dangers. The website is based on information Developed by DOH, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other organizations. It includes a listing of various bio-agents, frequently asked questions on bioterrorism, recent DOH news releases and alerts, and other valuable information that might help doctors, laboratories, and emergency rooms recognize illnesses caused by biological or chemical weaponry. Small Business Training Dates Released The Washington, DC Small Business Development Center Network (DC SBDC) at Howard University released its training calendar for the second quarter of 2003. The training sessions span a variety of topics including:
Many sessions are free, while others charge a nominal fee. The sessions are held at the five DC SBDC service centers and other locations within DC. Regional Workforce Survey Begins on April 4th Mayor Williams would like to encourage businesses to participate in an upcoming workforce survey. Over the next six weeks, 69,000 metropolitan-area businesses with five or more employees will receive calls requesting participation in a 15-minute telephone or Internet survey. The research will enable the Mayor's Workforce Investment Council to identify workforce needs and more effectively prepare the District's workforce. The survey results will be used to improve existing and planned workforce education and training programs. Businesses selected for participation will receive a notification postcard one week prior to the phone call. Metro Provides Real-Time Email Alerts to Customers Metrorail customers can now subscribe to a free email alert service via the Metro website that provides real-time information regarding Metrorail service delays and disruptions. "eAlerts" can be sent to email-capable desktop computers, cellular phones, pagers, or personal digital assistants. Customers can find out information such as the duration of a delay on a specific line and in what direction the delay is taking place. Visit Metro to subscribe to this free service. 7. Conference Connects Federal Agencies with Vendors The federal government Offices of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization will host a procurement conference on Wednesday, April 23, 2003, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. This national conference intends to foster business partnerships between the federal Government, its prime contractors, and small, minority, service-disabled veteran-owned, veteran-owned, HUBZone, and women-owned businesses.
