Applications Now Available for Strengthening Partners Initiative The Mayor's Office of Partnerships and Grants Development (OPGD) is now accepting applications for its 2004-2005 Strengthening Partners Initiative (SPI) class. SPI is a capacity building program that provides an opportunity for emerging nonprofit and faith-based organizations to attend customized training sessions, learn from nonprofit mentors, and build a new peer network. The free one-year program is available to executive directors from organizations located in and providing direct services to the District of Columbia. Twenty-five organizations will be selected through a competitive application process. The deadline for applications is July 2, 2004, at 5 pm. For more information about the program or to obtain an application, call OPGD at (202) 727-8900. View the announcement or visit OPGD. 3. ABRA Offers Specialized Training on New ABC Regulationse The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) is offering all licensed alcoholic beverage establishments and the business community a series of specialized trainings on the new ABC regulations as approved by the DC City Council. These training sessions will help the merchants and the business community to gain a better understanding of the new ABC regulations. The participants will receive handouts, participate in a question and answer session, and there will be time for discussion with ABRA's General Counsel. Topics to be covered include: how the new ABC regulations will affect your business, the new ABRA civil penalty and fine schedule, increases in license fees, new available permits and licenses, changes to ABC managers' licenses, moratorium procedures, charging a corking fee, and much more. Links to the times and locations of the training sessions are given below. Please note that there are two different locations for the trainings. Choose one day, one time, and one location. For locations and dates, view the announcement. To register contact La Verne Fletcher at (202) 442-4499 or by email by June 18, 2004. Visit ABRA.4. Application Process Begins for Board of Trade's Small Business Partnership With its first successful year nearing completion, the Greater Washington Board of Trade's Small Business Partnership (SBP) launched its second year of building strong business links between emerging small companies and existing, well-established Board of Trade member firms. The 2004-2005 program will accept 30 companies for the Academy training courses and 15-20 companies for the Alliance matchmaking program. Applications, available online, are due June 15. The SBP provides training and business development opportunities for small companies and helps them grow their quality client base by connecting them to larger Board of Trade member firms. Companies enrolled in the program gain business development connections and establish mentoring relationships with larger companies. SBP offers two program components for interested companies. The SBP Academy is a one-year program that provides classroom training and group exchanges for 30 small business owners who have been in operation for five years or less. Board of Trade member firms with expertise in business operations act as faculty for the Academy and offer one-on-one pro bono sessions. The SBP Alliance is a one-year program that serves 15-20 maturing companies who have been in business for at least five years and have annual sales of more than $500,000. Alliance companies are matched with larger Board of Trade businesses to create new opportunities and focus on sales strategies for each Alliance member. There is no cost for companies to participate. Eligibility requirements are described in detail on the application. For more info, contact Lindsay Godwin at (202) 857-5934 or by email. View the announcement or visit the Board of Trade. 5. Regional Report 2004 Documents "Region on the Rise" The Greater Washington Initiative released its signature annual publication, the Regional Report. This year's report takes a fresh look at the area's assets and confirms very positive economic and demographic trends; new data compares our region to other major international cities. The report is available online at the newly re-organized website of GWI, the Board of Trade's economic development affiliate. Visit the Greater Washington Initiative. 6.
