OPGD Nonprofit Initiative, WDCEP Annual Meeting, How to Start a Nonprofit Series, Green Redevelopment, Upcoming Business Classes
1. Deadline Extended for OPGD's Strengthening Partners Initiative The DC Office of Partnerships and Grants Development (OPGD) will accept applications for its 2006-2007 Strengthening Partners Initiative (SPI) training program through Friday, August 18, 2006. SPI is a free training opportunity for emerging nonprofit and faith-based organizations. The one-year program is designed to help nonprofit professionals move their organizations to the next level of operations and service delivery. According to a recent national study of nonprofit executive leaders–Daring to Lead 2006–executive directors are concerned with organizational sustainability and are seeking new skills and strategies through capacity-building training and other professional development. The SPI program provides this much needed and desired professional development. "Through this initiative, OPGD is supporting the Mayor's goal of expanding opportunity for all District residents and strengthening the organizational leadership and management capacity of local nonprofit officials," said OPGD Director Lafayette Barnes Executive directors (or equivalent positions) from organizations providing direct services to District residents may apply if several conditions are met. The organization must 1) be incorporated in DC; 2) have 501(c)(3) status from the IRS; 3) have an annual budget under $500,000; 4) strive for professional and organizational growth; 5) and have a strong commitment to complete the 12-month program and attendance requirements. Again, the new deadline for applications is August 18, 2006, at 5 pm. For further information, contact OPGD at (202) 727-8900. View the 2006-2007 SPI Application.* 2. Washington, DC Economic Partnership Announces Annual Meeting and Development Showcase On Tuesday, October 17, 2006, the Washington, DC Economic Partnership will hold its Annual Meeting Luncheon and DC Development Showcase at the Washington Convention Center. Last year's event drew nearly 1,000 people to the venue and this year 1,200 people are expected to attend. The WDCEP Annual Meeting is a celebration for the District's economic renaissance and development dynamic. At the luncheon WDCEP will honor the best in the real estate community with an awards ceremony. The Development Showcase, which is the only exhibition to celebrate development throughout the city, will precede the luncheon and awards. This popular showcase will feature approximately 65 exhibitors displaying projects currently under construction, planned and proposed throughout the District of Columbia's eight wards. Projects on display will range from retail to residential and from mixed-use to office. Another highlight of the Annual Meeting is the release of the Economic Partnership's 2006-2007 Development Activity Guide. Highlighting over 900 development projects in the District, this is a must-have publication for developers and those seeking to learn more about development in the District. The guide is a compendium of the city's $41.1 billion in economic development since 2001 and successfully displays the District's vigorous economic resurgence.
